Message from the
Board of Management
Hello and welcome to the
first edition of Mallow Golf Club's 2010 newsletter in this new
format. Our aim is to keep you informed about the latest events and
activities happening at the club and to encourage you to spend more
time enjoying our course and club facilities. It is our intention to
have three newsletters throughout the year (spring, summer and
autumn) to ensure that you are kept up to speed with developments and
are aware of our future plans. The newsletter will be supplemented by
notices of other developments that may arise and these will be posted
on the notice board.
Firstly, we want to start
by wishing you the very best for the golf season ahead and trust it
will be filled with enjoyment and success.
Following the election by
the Members of the current Board of Management, as the first Board
elected and charged with managing Mallow Golf Club for a continuous
term of 3 years duration, we have been working to establish ourselves
as a Team to approach the job at hand. As with all Clubs and
organisations operating in the current economic reality, this is
going to be a very challenging year for us but we are committed to
deliver on our key business objective which is to use the resources
available to us in the most beneficial, effective and efficient
manner in order to improve, promote and develop Mallow Golf Club.
We are confident that we
have a team of people - staff and volunteers capable of delivering on
our commitment of continuous improvement both in terms of the quality
of the Golf Course and the facilities we provide. With the economy
still struggling to find its way out of recession, it is imperative
that we remain focused on finding innovative ways to provide the best
service possible for you our members, to generate additional revenue
and remain viable through encouraging new members to join and most of
all, not compromise on sustaining our greatest asset - Mallow Golf
Course. Our target this year will be to remain within budget and
balance income and expenditure. In doing this, we may need to make
some tough decisions in order to rationalise our resources and reduce
expenditure. In 2009, we took the decision not to increase our
subscription, as we believed it would be counter productive. We will
keep you updated on progress throughout the year.
Now that the course has
seen off the worst of the harsh winter conditions, it has come
through with flying colours thanks to the excellent work carried out
over the winter months by our Grounds staff and the Course Committee.
Our course is in excellent condition and promises to play better than
ever for the 2010 season. You can see from the regular monthly course
plan and maintenance programme that is posted on the notice board
both what the predicted and planned programme of work will be for the
month.
Our Juvenile section
continues to grow and thanks is due to the hard work put in by the
sub-committee - your efforts will pay dividends in the future of the
Club.
The very best of luck to
all our Teams this year and we wish you every success in the inter
Club competitions.
It is vital that members
make every effort to support the club in every way possible,
particularly at this time and we ask that you communicate with the
current Ladies and Gents Member's Committees, staff and Board Members
to offer your ideas for improvement, innovations and to build on the
improvements and developments that are being made to develop a golf
club that we can all be proud of.
We are committed to the
challenge and focused on the job in hand but we cannot do this
without the work and dedicated input of all the Volunteers who work
on Committees and Sub-Committees behind the scenes. We thank them for
all of the hours they put in on your behalf and ask that you give
them the necessary support to execute their extensive portfolios.

The
Jubilee Garden:-
January 2010
|
We had our first visit of
the year from our Agronomist, Mr Conor Nolan of the STRI and after
his inspection of all 18 holes he made the following comments and
recommendations.
1.Overall the course was in
good condition after a very hard winter but could do with a program
of fertilising to boost growth as fast as possible. This will
commence on Tuesday 13th April.
2.He was not happy with the
putting surface of our greens noting they were very bumpy and
scarred. The remedy is to feed them and drop the height of cut from
6.5mm to 5.5mm by the weekend. Some may need a further feed in two
weeks. This, he believes will heal the scarring and improve the role
of the ball. He was very happy with the overall health of the greens
and is confident their condition will improve very quickly. The
height of cut should be reduced to 3.5mm in a few weeks.
3.We are continuing with
the program of killing off the rye grass on the aprons of all greens.
This will, for a short period, make them unsightly due to some
discolouration.
4.Sanding and topdressing
will continue as last year.
5.In the autumn we are
hoping to rebuild the back of the 13th green to take reduce the
severity of the slope in this area. This work will be done as
in-house project, and overseen by Conor Nolan.
For the present we will be
reducing the putting surface in this area to help correct the severe
runoff.
All comments &
suggestions by Members are welcome.

From Monday 31st May the Club will introduce a 7
Day Timesheet. This will operate up to 5.30pm on Non Competition
Days.
We are doing this for the following reasons;
- To allow the Members first call on
tee time reservations
- Provide the club with up to date
information as to the tee time availability for visitors
- Assist the orderly operation of tee
time at the 1st tee
- Provide information on tee time
usage and footfall.
Members who do not have access to a
computer will be able to ring in for a tee time at the Office or
Proshop.
We look forward to your co-operation and feedback.

This year our, Grades 3,5, & 6 teams reached
the knock-out stages of the Munster Competition with the Grade 6 team

The AGM was relatively well attended, mostly by
committee members, who were re-elected to their posts.
Our annual Table quiz had members &
their mastermind friends & family competing over song titles
instead of match points.
The new net is in place over the practice
area so you can practice your skills for the upcoming events.
The nets on the Courts have been upgraded.
